Charles
“Coming from a law enforcement background, service is in my DNA. I help people on their journey, make them feel safe, and help them overcome obstacles. The Mattamy way lines up with my own mission, so it’s a perfect fit.”
As a member of Mattamy’s Tucson team, Charles (aka Blue) guides homebuyers through their purchase journey from the moment they enter a Mattamy sales center. While helping them choose the home that’s right for them, Blue also works behind the scenes with the construction team to finalize every detail. He communicates regularly with homebuyers to ensure their experience meets their expectations.
How’d you get started at Mattamy?
I started in real estate 20-plus years ago while I was a police officer. I wanted to improve my financial situation, so I earned my real estate license, figured out how to buy my first home, and helped other officers buy homes and build wealth. After I was injured in the line of duty, I had to retire from the force and find a new mission. When I drove by a Mattamy sign, I decided to call them up and ask how the new home market works. The recruitment process was quick, and we haven’t stopped since.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Mattamy’s and my ‘service first’ approach. As a New Home Counselor, I make sure that anyone who walks into my office leaves with something helpful, including knowledge about the homebuying process. I service my homebuyers like I’m still a police officer on a call. It’s my job to protect you and get you where you need to be. I put them at ease and employ my experience to help them begin the exciting next stage of their lives.
How is a New Home Counselor different from a resale agent/broker?
I was a resale agent and broker before, so I really appreciate the security I now feel in the new home market. In resale, you constantly worry about the bottom line and dealing with everything from medical insurance to marketing budgets. In the resale market, there is so much insecurity, and no one is trying to help you be better. In contrast, Mattamy sets us up to succeed, with full company support, the security of a paycheck every two weeks, a 401K match and opportunities to move into different markets, selling a variety of home types or leadership.
Any recent accomplishment you feel especially proud of?
Right now, I’m helping Mattamy complete a new community priced for first-time homebuyers. It’s exciting to help people who never thought they could afford a home, and now they can. There are lots of hugs and tears, especially when I tell them all the model home features are standard rather than upgrades.
How do you balance other life priorities with your Mattamy career?
This job has a lot movement and unknowns dictated by the market, so every day is different and you have to be flexible, and get the job done. Mattamy is really good about respecting your off time – and our team members are always there to support each other – so you can get home and do what you need to do. I can drive my kids to school, referee college and high school basketball around the state, and enjoy family movie nights at home.
