Jorge
“You enjoy coming to work here because you know the company really supports you. Whether it’s your team solving a problem together, or taking a few minutes to acknowledge good work, the culture here is like nothing I’ve ever experienced – in the best possible way.”
Recently promoted to Senior Builder, Jorge applies his 20 years of experience to help construction managers complete new Mattamy communities. As an on-site superintendent, he ensures daily requirements are met, so projects proceed on schedule, oversees and supports the builders and trades people, and performs quality control for each home.
How’d you get started at Mattamy?
The building sector fell in my lap after high school, when I found work as a mason, plus side jobs in construction. Over time, after periods working in customer service and aircraft maintenance, I reached my goal to become a construction superintendent and area construction manager with one of the country’s largest builders. Unfortunately, the workload was a bit overwhelming, and I decided to look for better work balance. People I knew at Mattamy praised the way the company treats its team members, so I submitted my resumé. I was impressed when they promised to place me on a work site close to my home, and they kept their word. It’s little things like that that are part of the Mattamy culture.
What makes your role interesting and rewarding?
We are the quality control for the homebuyer, so my role is to ensure we always turn over the best home possible. To do that, I walk every house, every room, every day, and I look at every home as if it’s mine. These homes are the biggest investment many people will ever make, and I treat it that way. I love seeing their faces when we turn over the keys to them. I also enjoy mentoring my co-workers, helping them overcome challenges and continue learning on the job.
How do you balance other life priorities with your Mattamy career?
I have to admit, my career is really important to me, and I want to give it my all, to be successful for me and my family. However, Mattamy absolutely encourages us to have balance because they understand we’re human. I definitely find time for camping and ATV off-roading with my family, and sometimes I dust off my accordion to share my love of Mexican banda and norteña music.
What type of person can thrive in a career at Mattamy?
Having a background in construction is a plus, but most important is caring about doing a good job, wanting to work on a real team, and respecting each other – including the guy pushing the broom. You should have the drive to turn over the best quality work you can, and always do the right thing, even when no one is watching. If you do that, this company will acknowledge your work with lots of opportunity.
